Water Department to Perform Hydrant Flushing

The Posen Public Works Department will flush hydrants throughout Posen beginning the week of May 31st, 2022. Crews will work Monday through Friday between 7am and 3pm— weather permitting. The flushing program is expected to last five weeks, ending July 1st, 2022.

Flushing removes harmless minerals that collect in the water mains. The project is part of the village’s routine maintenance program to assure the best water quality to our residents. Flushing hydrants helps to maintain the integrity of the distribution system by keeping the water lines clean. It is also necessary for fire protection because flushing ensures that the hydrants are working properly.

During the flushing process, residents may experience low water pressure or slightly discolored water, even if hydrants are being flushed several blocks away. If you experience discoloration in your water service, please do not be alarmed. Your water will clear up once it is run for a few minutes. We suggest you run the cold water from the faucet nearest to the water meter or shutoff valve (laundry sink, outside faucet) to flush the service. We suggest that on days we flush, you may not want to do laundry during the hours listed above. Possible discoloration in the water can stain light colored clothing. Please note that your water is safe for all other uses and that slightly higher amounts of chlorine will be added to the system during maintenance.

We urge residents to register for Code Red Emergency Community Alerts on the village website. That is how we will update what streets we will be doing the hydrant flushing on the day before. It is also a great source to be notified of any water main breaks, street repair, road closure, evacuation notices, bio-terrorism alerts, boil water notices, missing child reports, etc. Residents with questions, comments, and concerns can contact the Posen Public Works Department. We appreciate your cooperation, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
